Connecticut didn’t have to wait long for its first major Powerball Double Play win — just two weeks into the feature, a Meriden resident struck gold.
The lucky woman, who had never played the CT Lottery before, said the win still doesn’t feel real. “I’m in total shock,” she shared.
She decided to join the excitement surrounding the recent nearly $1 billion Mega Millions frenzy and grabbed a Powerball ticket as well, opting for Quick Pick.
Since she wasn’t familiar with the game, a store clerk walked her through the process. When he suggested adding Double Play for an extra chance to win, she took his advice — and it changed everything.
Her ticket matched all five black balls in the Double Play draw — 47, 17, 19, 53, 61 — securing a $500,000 prize. Missing only the Double Play Powerball, she came just one number shy of the incredible $10 million top payout.
The winning ticket was sold at H&H Mart on Broad St. in Meriden. Double Play, available for an additional $1, gives Powerball players a second shot using the same numbers, with a maximum prize of $10 million.
The winner says the windfall will help her pay off her mortgage and celebrate her daughter’s upcoming wedding.
A huge congratulations to Connecticut’s first major Double Play champion — and to her soon-to-be-married daughter!
