Mega Millions Mania: Cathedral City Shopper Hits $2.1 Million Jackpot

Could a coworker of yours be unexpectedly missing in action today? Perhaps they’re the newest millionaire in town, courtesy of the Mega Millions lottery.

A lucky shopper in Cathedral City has just become over $2 million richer. Their ticket matched five numbers from the Mega Millions draw on Tuesday night, missing only the Mega number, landing them a hefty $2,151,945. This winning ticket emerged from a local supermarket, as confirmed by the California Lottery.

Interestingly, while similar winning tickets in other states would bring in $1 million or sometimes even more, California’s unique pari-mutuel payout system means winnings are calculated based on ticket sales and winner count, elevating this winner’s fortune to an impressive sum.

In comparison, another ticket from Michigan with the same number match is valued at $1 million. However, no one managed to snag the jackpot by correcting all six numbers, setting the stage for the next draw’s jackpot to soar to an estimated $687 million.

The Tuesday draw revealed the numbers 2, 49, 50, 61, and 70, with 14 as the Mega number, against a whopping $650 million jackpot. This draw marked the 25th occurrence without a jackpot winner.

With odds of matching all five numbers plus the Mega number at 1 in 302,575,350 and an overall winning probability of 1 in 24, anticipation builds. Mega Millions is played in 45 states, including the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands, making it a nationwide phenomenon.
