Important Things to Know About Powerball

  • Since April 2020, the minimum jackpot is $20,000.
  • Apart from 45 states in the U.S., three other jurisdictions participate in the lottery: Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  • The Powerball lottery offers 9 different prize tiers.
  • Eight of the nine prize tiers are fixed cash amounts, but all prizes are pari-mutuel in California.
  • In Arizona, Iowa, and Louisiana, you must be 21 or older to play; in Nebraska, 19; and 18 in all other states and jurisdictions.
  • Winners can either collect the jackpot as a lump sum or as 30 annual payments.
  • If the jackpot goes higher than $150 million, the 10x multiplier becomes unavailable.
  • Since 2021, Monday drawings have been added to the Wednesday and Saturday night Powerball numbers. That is also when Powerball Double Play became available.

The Top 5 Stories of Powerball Winners

  1. $1.586 Billion – The biggest lottery prize in history resulted from a draw on January 13, 2016. Three winning tickets received a portion of the jackpot prize, coming from California, Florida, and Tennessee. The winners were, respectively, the Robinson family, the Acosta family, and the Kaltschmidt family. The winner from Florida played the same number for several years before becoming rich. That is quite the opposite of the Californian winners, who gave most of their jackpot to charity. As for the Tennessee family, they even took their dog together to collect their winnings.
  2. $768.4 million – Manuel Franco played the lottery for six years, from the moment he became 18, until getting his jackpot on March 27, 2019. Young and full of dreams, he said he could not stop screaming for almost 10 minutes when he discovered it.
  3. $758.7 million – Mavis L. Wanczyk received a total of $336 million because she decided to get the lump sum and had to pay the taxes. Even so, that is enough to change her life when she became a Powerball recordist on 23 August 2017.
  4. $730 million – No one had the luck to win the Powerball jackpot prize from September 2020 until 20 January 2021. Someone in Maryland, unknown to the public, won $730 million.
  5. $687.8 million – Lerynne West left her winning ticket in her sister’s truck but fortunately got it back and received half of the incredible jackpot disclosed in the Powerball results. The other person to share that prize on October 27, 2018, was Robert Bailey, 67 years old, who received a lump-sum payment of $125.3 million after taxes.

Powerball History

Powerball did not start from scratch the way we know it. It evolved and adapted to keep an interesting lottery game in the United States. The road to becoming the recordist in jackpot prizes was quite long:

  • December 1987: Seven lotteries formed the MUSL (Multi-State Lottery Association). They were the lotteries of the District of Columbia, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oregon, Rhode Island, and West Virginia.
  • February 1988: The MUSL launched Lotto*America, which we know today as Powerball.
  • August 1989 – January 1991: The lotteries of eight other states joined the Lotto*America game: Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Montana, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
  • April 1992: The MUSL renamed Lotto*America as Powerball, and its game format became 5/45 + 1/45. The first Powerball results came on April 22, with its first draw, and the starting jackpot was defined as $2 million.
  • April 1994 – October 1996: Other six U.S. states joined Powerball: Arizona, Connecticut, Louisiana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, and New Mexico.
  • November 1997: The format was altered to 5/49 + 1/42, and the starting jackpot changed to $10 million. The annuity payments changed from 20 to 29 years, and players were allowed to choose cash.
  • March 2001: A wheel with 12 slots, the Power Play feature, was added. Multipliers ranged from 1x to 5x.
  • August 2001 – June 2002: Colorado and Pennsylvania joined Powerball.
  • October 2002: Format adapted to 5/53 + 1/42, and the Power Play wheel received 3 more slots. Powerball tickets started to be offered in South Carolina.
  • July 2003 – 2004: Maine, North Dakota, Tennessee, and Vermont joined Powerball.
  • August 2005: Format changed again in less than 3 years, to 5/55 + 1/42. The starting jackpot was raised to $15 million, and the Power Play wheel changed to 16 slots.
  • January – May 2006: North Carolina and Oklahoma are now participants.
  • January 2009: Format changed to 5/59 + 1/39, and starting jackpot updated to $20 million. The Power Play started to be drawn with an RNG (Random Number Generator). Florida joined the other states in Powerball.
  • October 2009 – November 2010: In that period, 13 other states were added. They were Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, and Washington.
  • January 2012: Format adapted, increasing the normal pool of numbers and reducing the Powerball one, resulting in 5/69 + 1/35. Jackpot increased to a starting amount of $40 million, and the Match 5 prize was raised to $1 million.
  • April 2013 – September 2014: California, Puerto Rico, and Wyoming joined Powerball.
  • October 2015: Powerball adopted the current format of 5/69 + 1/26. The 4 + 1 prize tier was established as $50,000, and the 10x Power Play multiplier became available to jackpots not bigger than $150 million.
  • January 2020: Mississippi recently joined.
  • March 2020: Starting jackpot was reduced to $20 million because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The minimum roll between draws is defined as $2 million.
  • April 2020: Updated the starting jackpot and the minimum roll increase between draws. They now rely on the sales of tickets and interest rates.
  • August 2021: The price was increased to $3 in Idaho alone, automatically including PowerPlay in any entry. Powerball added another drawing day. Now, Monday is another drawing day in addition to the Wednesday and Saturday night Powerball numbers. The Double Play add-on is created.
